INDIVIDUAL FILM ANALYSIS : DON’T MOVE

DIRECTED BY ANTHONY MELTON

Don’t Move’ is a short film directed by Anthony Melton. The short film displays a feeling of horror, fear, intimidation and pain. The film caught my attention right from the beginning, especially where the glass cup was rotating in a circular mood and also  all the characters were in a stiff position without any movement. This made me curious to know what will happen next and the reason why the characters were in one position.

’ Don’t Move’ is a story about a group of six friends hanging out in an apartment and they decided to play a game which led to the release of a demon. The rule of the game was that five must die and one will live. Jill and Paul died due to their own carelessness, Marc understood the rule of the game and got the idea of sacrificing his friends to the demon so he lives but due to his selfish intention he got possessed in the process and what ahead with his intentions.

He intentionally called Sarah on phone and due to the noise, the demon sensed her and killed her. Anna realized the intentions of Marc and she out-smarted him and he was also killed. Graham was assumed dead but fortunately he was just unconscious throughout the whole time. When he gained consciousnesses the demon reappeared and with the shout and fright Anna being the closest the demon ripped her skin off leading her to die. The central message of the film is about the price of greed, morality and curiosity. ‘Don’t Move’ warns that reckless pursuit of forbidden knowledge and power comes with devastating cost and when faced with terror, the line between humanity and monstrosity quickly blurs. The sudden betrayals, false hope of escape and hopeless finale deliver gut-punch surprises that turn a simple premise into a deeply unsettling experience.

The characters were well-developed, considering it being a short film of around thirteen minutes duration and also they were emotionally believable and impactful in their roles which made the film catchy. Anna, her friends and the demon delivered a strong performance that portrayed pain, fear, horror and betrayal. Anna stood out positively in the film, she showed deep emotions with only few words. Without a second thought you can tell fear was drawn all over her face. The demon also appeared scary in the film. The relationship between characters were not deeply developed through dialogue but their silent interaction made it powerful. This bond was simple but emotionally strong.

The cinematography was very close, personal and focused. The camera followed Anna, Marc, Jill, Sarah and the demon closely, which made their fear and pain feel stronger . The big close up shots of Anna, Marc and Jill in their standing position,

which showed how tensed and scared they felt inside. The colors were dull, and the lighting looked natural, which made the film feel real, serious and scary. The demon was often introduced with a scary noisy and sound, which made the demon seem scary and depicted the notion that somebody is going to die.

The film used very little soundtrack, which made it feel more real. Background sounds and noise showed how scary the environment was. There wasn’t much dialogues, but the few that were said was clear.

Sounds like footsteps, shouting, ringtone, ripping and screams were easy to hear and added to the tension, making the audience pay attention and feel scared. The lack of music made the film feel more realistic and made the silence and everyday sounds feel more emotional, powerful and scary.

As a short film, it delivered the impact I was expecting that used real life situations and strong acting to show deep emotions that people feel pain and even grown ups can be scared. All the characters gave a strong performance and scenes told the story well. The emotional pace of the film was also very strong. One of the film’s strengths was how it showed emotions without needing many words. The film made me feel scared and frighten. I would recommend ‘Don’t Move’ to others because it is a well-made film that shows real-life experience. When there is an instruction is given do well to go by the rules and also don’t do unnecessary things that will put you in danger at any cost. The film leaves a lasting impression about how selfishness can lead to greed and betrayal.  It makes viewers think deeply about the hidden feelings people carry every day, whether they are trustworthy or not.

Anna was the lead character (protagonist). Her goal was to escape from the apartment where the demon was haunting her and her friends.

The antagonist of the film was the demon who has been haunting Anna, Marc, Paul, Jill, Sarah and Graham and preventing them from leaving. Though the protagonist was devastated and scared she was killed by the demon at the end.

The film concluded with the antagonist vanishing, leaving the only survivor Graham.
