FILM ANALYSIS BY FREDRICA AMANKWAH

‘Work’ is a film that display a sense of tension, embarrassment, emotional and mental pressure.
The film caught my attention right from the beginning, especially with the lead character’s
silence and the serious mood around her. The story follows a young woman named Jess who goes
through a day of mistreatment at her job while trying hard not to show her feelings. As the day
goes on, the pressure she feels keeps getting stronger. The film also shows the stress caused by
hidden racial tension and mental strain in the workplace. There was no plot twist, but the
emotions and how they were shown through actions and visuals were strong and unpredictable.

The lead character’s actions, facial expressions, and responses felt real. The supporting
characters also acted in a natural way that fit the setting, which made the film feel intense and
emotional. Jasmin Breinburg who played Jess, the main character, gave a strong performance as
someone who was emotional and under stress. Her non-verbal expression carried the emotional
weight of the film. Jess stood out because she showed deep feelings with only a few words. The
quiet tension between Jess and the world around her, at work, on the bus and on the street was
powerful, even though not much was said, the way these silent relationships were shown made
the film captivating.

The cinematography was very close, personal and focused. The camera followed Jess closely,
which made her stress feel stronger. The Big close up shots of Jess in busy places stood out,
which showed how alone and upset she felt inside. The colours were dull, and the lighting looked
natural, which made the film feel real and serious. Jess was often shown in the middle of noisy
and busy places, which made her seem disconnected from the world and focused on her own
thoughts and struggles.

The film used very little soundtrack, which made it feel more real. Background sounds and noise
showed how stressful the environment was. There wasn’t much talking, but the words were clear.
Sounds like footsteps, shouting, and noise at work were easy to hear and added to the tension,
making the audience pay attention. The lack of music made the film feel more realistic and made
the silence and everyday sounds feel more emotional and powerful.

As a short film, it delivered the impact I was expecting that used real life situations and strong
acting to show deep emotions that people feel but don’t always show in daily life. Jess gave a
strong performance and scenes told the story well. The emotional pace of the film was also very
strong. One of the film’s strengths was how it showed emotions without needing many words.
However, the limited dialogue and abstract style might make it harder for some people to
understand the full story. The film made me feel frustration, sympathy, and the emotional build-
up was very strong. I would recommend ‘Work’ to others because it is a well-made film that
shows real-life struggles, emotional pain, and social issues through powerful storytelling. The
film leaves a lasting impression about the silent emotional pressure people go through, especially
in relation to race, social class, and work life. It makes viewers think deeply about the hidden
feelings people carry every day.

A young teenage girl named Jess is the protagonist in the short film. She quietly goes through her
day even though the world around her is filled with stress and judgment. The antagonist is the
society itself, there’s racism and social pressure. These events reflect systemic principles,
authority and judgment, that she must face. Jess doesn’t fight or retaliate but instead deals with
everything emotionally and mentally. The way she moves, her expressions and quietness show
inner weakness happening to her.

At the most emotional part of the film, on the train, Jess is caught between a situation and her
hidden pain. In that moment, she had to choose whether to resistor stay strong. Her cries became
her release and survival. There is no big or dramatic ending, but her emotional release shows that
she has found a small sense of peace inside herself. The world around her is still the same.
